Top 5 Worst Living Dictators

October 8, 2008 by User ImageB.M. Garrett

There is much talk today about an axis of evil, despotic pariah states and countries intent on harming their neighbours by preparing the production of weapons of mass production. So who are the men behind these states and why are they still in power? Why has the world community only acted to remove a handful (if any) of them? Why is the UN powerless in this regard?

Than Shwe, Burma

A hard line dictator who has taken a country with a questionable human rights record to new depths. Burma is famous for having the world’s highest number of child soldiers with regular kidnappings amongst its own population. The imprisonment (house arrest) of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi and the government’s repeated attempts at intimidation of her followers adds to the grip on power held by General Shwe.

Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe

Mugabe was once an internationally respected figure for having led an anti-colonial war of liberation. However, over the years his presidency of the country bears more resemblance to that of a despotic dictator. Beatings of opposition supporters and their followers are frequent and brutal with an estimated 70,000 tortured or killed.

Crown Prince Abdullah, Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is a particularly undemocratic country in that no elections are held whatsoever. Whilst an oil rich country and investor in the United States, Saudi Arabia, governed by Sharia law, has a wide range of seemingly ridiculous restrictions on daily life. For example, unrelated men and women are forbidden to appear in public together, a rule enforced by the country’s morality police and punished by flogging or jail.

Teodoro Obiang Nguema, Equatorial Guinea

When oil reserves were found in this small country of only 500,000 inhabitants, international oil companies poured billions of dollars into the country, only for it to go directly into the personal bank account of Obiang Nguema in the U.S. The inhabitants of Equatorial Guinea see none of these oil revenues and live on less than a dollar a day.

Kim Jong-Il, North Korea

Ruler of North Korea since 1994, Kim has been reported to be developing an arsenal of nuclear weapons and long range missiles, capable of threatening its neighbours, notably Japan. Kim is renowned for being the most repressive living dictator anywhere on the planet, with his country at the bottom of the Freedom House ranking for political and civil liberties. There are also an estimated 150,000 North Korean dissenters in forced labour camps.

There is no wrong with Saudi Arabia, their sharia rules is based by their religion which is Islam. Do you think the people in Saudi feel suffer because of the rules? No, because they are already know the reason behind the rules and accept it with tolerance. Please don’t judge anything before you know the inside.
